Impress . Inspire . Increase Yums

UN Sustainable Development Goal

  • Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption of our resources
  • Population and consumption continues to increase
  • Current planet cannot sustain our demands
  • About 1/3 of all food that is produced gets wasted
  • Food waste is a contributor to carbon emissions.
  • People throw away edible food because of picky habits

Food Waste Issue

  • 1/3 of all food produced is never eaten

  • “about 300,000 tonnes of raw material is produced per year, which was intended for food but which does not go on to food.“
    the Swedish Board of Agriculture
  • “The production of the amount of food thrown every year corresponds to emissions of about 2 million tons of carbon dioxide”
    Swedish Environmental Protection Agency

Ideating

  • We originally started with water consumption but this lead us to food waste
  • We sketched and ideated on food waste, production, and consumption issues
  • Try to change people’s perspectives on food and their food waste habits
  • Came up with very different ideas from VR glasses, Interact game, food dispenser in grocery store, etc.
  • Decided on a social media app that changes the appearance of food in order to spark a conversation on people’s attitude towards food and their food waste habits

Prototyping

  • Purpose: Harvest more “Yums” from peers and portray a better, false version of reality
  • 1st Iteration: edit pictures of “ugly” fruit and make them “pretty”
  • 2nd Iteration: changes to app’s interactions and paths users can take
  • 3rd Iteration: redesigned app by adding a newsfeed and giving users four paths to take

User Testing

  • Interviewed and User tested in order to gather critique about the critical design and flow of the app
  • Main critique being inability to understand our intended message and to further improve the flow of the app
  • “Card sorting” with bananas that people would rank in order of a given question
  • We gathered more info about people's perception of fruit, their expectations when buying, eating, or posting fruit

Insights

  • There is an "ideal" version of produce. Even if people's taste preference is different- Gives insight into the superficial attitude of beauty
  • Students’ main concern was with their economy over food waste carbon emission- their wallet impacts their daily life more so than the environmental impact
  • Food's taste was the most important factor when determining if food should be thrown away or not
  • People wouldn't take "ugly" fruit even if it was free - This type of thinking contributes to food waste
  • Our app was too familiar. Mindless scrolling. We could change the comments to help get the message across.
  • We tried to strengthen our message but it supported the critique of social media more. We modelled after instagram and that muddled what we were trying to achieve
